The largest state in Malaysia, Sarawak holds a rich history and sees significant cultural convergence. For all that it is modern, technologically advanced and as well developed as any regular metropolis, Kuching – the capital city of Sarawak – is equally rich in the arts and boasts artists of international caliber.

Save the date: 15-21 October 2012

Mark your calendars! From 15-21 October 2012, Icograda and the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA), will host Rediscovery 2012.

About the theme

The theme for the 2012 Icograda Design Week in Sarawak is ‘Rediscovery’. Rediscovery reveals and celebrates indigenous design. Rediscovery demystifies the magic of Borneo for local and international designers. It invites participants to survey practices of local indigenous people and see how it relates to and provides context for the future of design.

Objectives

Through Rediscovery’s diverse programming, we will share case studies demonstrating the integration of design strategy and technology to develop sustainable business models for craft industries; showcase ways design and branding can develop and differentiate creative and eco-tourism; and explore cultural diversity in indigenous design.

GLIDE’12 partners with Iridescent to announce its Call for Papers

International – The Global Interaction in Design Conference (GLIDE) is working in collaboration with Iridescent, the Icograda Journal of Design Research to solicit scholarly papers for virtual presentation on 7 November 2012. GLIDE Committee Member, Audrey G. Bennett has been invited to serve as Guest Editor for Iridescent for the duration of this call.

GLIDE is a biennial, virtual conference that disseminates cutting-edge research on the role of communication design within global society. The purpose of a virtual-only format is to bridge cultural and geographic divides in an eco-friendly way.

GLIDE’12 will promote research and critical thinking on international issues surrounding food, nutrition and health. Today, food is no longer viewed simply for nourishment, pleasure or an overly mass-produced product. Now, due to global industrialisation, the way humans interact with food systems and production has reached a critical mass, requiring citizens of the world to consider the introduction of new methods and technological systems that will enable global cultures to remain healthy and viable in the foreseeable and unforeseeable future.

European Design Awards announces call for entries

Athens (Greece) – The European Design Awards have announced the call for submissions to the 2012 edition of this Icograda-endorsed competition. The European Design Awards is the comprehensive annual awards organisation celebrating the best of graphic design, illustration and digital design in Europe. The ED-Awards are joint effort by 15 communication design magazines from across Europe.

The ED-Awards boast a highly qualified jury, composed of representatives from the leading European design magazines. They are specialised design editors and critics who, who on a daily basis, recognise and promote the best of communication design internationally. An Icograda-appointed observer is also present to ensure competition guidelines are respected.

The ED-Awards receive the widest publicity in the design awards field in Europe. Agencies and designers who excel in the competition, receive ample coverage since the ED-Awards are organised by a network of design media, i.e. the means of communication themselves.

City of Cape Town appointed as World Design Capital® 2014

Taipei, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), 26 October 2011 – The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) announced today, that the City of Cape Town (South Africa) has been designated the World Capital Design® (WDC) 2014. The designated city was revealed on the closing day of the International Design Alliance Congress in Taipei. Cape Town is the fourth city to hold this biennial appointment and marks the first for the African continent.

Awarded to cities based on their commitment to use design as an effective tool for social, cultural and economic development, the WDC has become more than just a project or a programme. Today, it is a global movement and serves to acknowledge that design can, and does, impact the quality of human life. Icsid President and Member of the Selection Committee Dr. Mark Breitenberg stated, “It is encouraging to see how Cape Town plans to use design as a tool to solve urban challenges. I am confident that this new member of the WDC family will demonstrate to the world how design is expanding in application and influence.”

For Cape Town, the WDC appointment comes exactly two decades after reaching democracy. “2014, then, is the moment when the past and the future will come together for Cape Town, in contemplation and in action,” stated Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ms. Patricia de Lille. “It is a reflection of how the city has socially and physically reinvented itself.” Cape Town’s vision of design is based on socially responsible design, sustainability and innovation. As part of their bid, the theme “Live Design. Transform Life” was introduced in support of Cape Town’s objective to focus on enhancing the city’s infrastructure to make it a more liveable African City.

The biennial IDA Congress is the primary event for dialogue between designers and stakeholders of design in a summit format. The aim of the IDA Congress is to bring together the unified voice of designers around the world in a themed framework that advances the vision and mission of the IDA, by exploring and realising the benefits of design in a variety of fields with a stake in design, such as government (commerce, trade, culture etc.), INGOs, business, science and technology, education or social sciences (ethnography, sociology etc.)

The IDA’s primary objectives for the Congress are:

To promote the value of design-based collaboration between the IDA disciplines, to highlight their similarities as well as their unique attributes;

To emphasise the value of design-based collaborations with other fields that have a stake in design;

World Design Capital® 2014 shortlisted cities announced

Montreal (Canada) – Following deliberations on 9 June 2011, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) has the pleasure to announce on behalf of the members of the World Design Capital® (WDC) Selection Committee that the cities of Bilbao (Spain), Cape Town (South Africa) and Dublin (Ireland) have been selected as the three shortlisted cities that will move on to the next round of evaluation in the bid to becoming the World Design Capital in 2014.

In 2014 selection of World Design Capital will be the fourth appointment by Icsid of this biennial designation to a city, in recognition of its accomplishments in using design as a catalyst for development and reinvention, as well as for improving its social, cultural and economic environments.

After a comprehensive review of all bids submitted, the cities of Bilbao, Cape Town and Dublin distinguished themselves not only by demonstrating their individual approaches towards design in their cities, but also managed to convey the impact of these on the various aspects of social, cultural and economic life, as well as provided three very unique visions for how design will continue to reinvent their urban landscape. Furthermore, these cities demonstrated that they possessed the expertise, infrastructure and financial capabilities to successfully develop and implement an inspiring yearlong programme of international design related events, promoting design, as well as their city, on an international stage; and finally, illustrated how their citizens have and will continue to benefit from their cityʼs achievements in design.
